ACM Orientation 2k15

ACM, engraving its roots deep inside NUST, hosted yet another splendid event on 12th October 2015. The only SEECS society to hold an orientation for its general members. The best part? There were fun filled activities and food!

The orientation started with the recitation of Holy Quran at 1:00 PM in SEECS Seminar Hall where all the general members were seated. The host, Mana Tariq welcomed the members and started the not-so-formal ceremony. Faiza Faheem, General Secretary ACM Women Chapter was invited on stage and she explained the purpose of creation of the distinguished Women Chapter of ACM. She spoke freely about the need of women empowerment in our country.

Next up was the General Secretary Khawaja Usama Pervaiz. Welcomed by a round of applause, he gave a brief introduction of ACM and ASWAN. ASWAN is the part of ACM that works tirelessly towards social welfare and community service. ASWAN initiated the NUST Book Bank project which has helped hundreds of students get access to free books for a semester. In fact, this project is gaining momentum as more students are donating their old books increasing the circulation potential.

Umer Ahmed Mehtab, Vice President was next on stage called out by the crowd as the fun guy. He told the audience about many past events hosted by ACM such as the workshop seminar under the mighty Dr. Bebo White, the CS-Ed Week and the E-Gaming week. He livened up the situation showing photo collages of ACM activities and ACM team.

President ACM was invited on stage and he talked frankly, getting through to the general members. He encouraged participation in all rounds of events. He also appreciated the efforts of all general and executive members. He explained the working and hierarchy of the society while encouraging maximum people to take advantage of the opportunities that are laid ahead of them.

The fun part of the event began just after this, As Noor Nawab, Maryam Mehreen, Abeera Nazeer and Abdullah Afzal conducted some exciting games which included Act & React and People Bingo.
The games were a sure fast way to liven up the event, encourage the new members to participate and to help them feel comfortable in the new environment.

The audience was anxiously waiting for the promised food and refreshments for which proper arrangements were made. There was Pizza and an ACM customized cake. After the brunch, a photograph session of the new council was held which concluded the event.

ACM and ACM-W Welcomes the Batch of 2k15

This year, ACM and ACM-W kicked off their activities by organizing a very successful WOW event on Thursday, 10th September, 2015. The theme for this year was none other than Lego – the building toys famous around the world. The grand event was marketed on social media with the genius tag line:
“LEGO of your fears;
Get in on the WOW cheers!”

The SEECS lobby was decorated with the ACM colours of blue and white. Registrations for General Membership were held from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm but the real fun was experienced from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
The main activities that were covered included:
  • Nail Art – girls got their nails done and enhanced the beauty of their hands.
  • Workout Challenge – this was the activity that attracted the boys of 2k15 the most, perhaps. They faced off against their friends in an epic workout challenge to prove that they could do more pushups.

  • Charades – the classic activity which allowed the people to guess the movie their friend was acting out. Mess ups and impossible-to-act-out movie names surely made the activity fun!
  • Sack Run – this was perhaps the most popular game. It was the source of laughs all around as people wore sacks and raced against each other while slipping and sliding and trying desperately to maintain their balance!
  • Balloon pop relay – this was another popular activity. People raced to the finish line to pop a balloon without touching it with their hands. A lot of giggles were produced as people tried everything from sitting on the balloons to stepping on them with their feet!
  • Photo booth – this year, staying true to the theme, the photo booth was decorated with the Lego design. Scores of friends posed for group pictures and many wanted solo pictures as well to keep as their new display pictures!

The incentive for participating in the games was exclusive discounts and free pizza from Frankenstein Restaurant as well as free food vouchers from Tuscany Courtyard. Because after all, you can’t say no to delicious food!
Our sponsors helped us organize this successful event and they deserve a special mention. They were:
  • Frankenstein Restaurant – they were generous enough to bring pizza and offer exclusive student discounts of up to 40%!
  •  ISIC – they set up their own desk and informed students about the benefits of applying for their own International Student Identity Cards including travel discounts and discounts on various goods.
  • Tuscany Courtyard – food vouchers of this famous restaurant were given away as prizes to the participants of various activities.
  • Codistan – 5 Tuscany Courtyard food vouchers on behalf of Codistan, the brilliantly successful startup, were up for grabs if people could achieve the high score in Fruitify, the addictive game, till Thursday.

All in all, it was surely a day that the batch of 2k15 will remember for years to come. The ACM and ACM-W Executive body had great fun in getting to know their juniors a bit better and we’re sure the juniors were fully entertained!

We wish the SEECS batch of 2k15 a great year ahead!

C Workshop By ACM

On 12th and 13th of November, 2015 a highly interactive and helpful C Workshop was held by ACM’s own Muhammad Waseem Khan and Uzair Ghauri from BESE-3 who very kindly gave us some of his precious time in the Shirazi and Farabi Labs at SEECS UG Block.

The aim of the workshop was to help freshmen get a crash course sort of treatment for the fundamentals of procedural programming courses they are being taught in the semester. In the courses they study throughout the semester the main focus is the building of concepts that are the basis of core coding. The workshop intends to familiarize students with syntax and language constructs that are overlooked normally.

The great turnout was an indicator as to how much the help was appreciated. Students were open with asking questions and our instructors were quite helpful with the answers. Mr Waseem Khan being the Chair Person of ACM NUST Chapter did not hesitate to explain these special words we call code in the simplest of ways despite himself being in his final year of study in striving for a degree in Software Engineering. It was a pleasure to witness such an exchange of knowledge.

Uzair Ghauri began teaching with a very lecture-like approach by aid of very helpful presentation slides.

He explained different kinds of loops (for, while, do-while etc), selection statements and gave some tricks and tips to students to help them get these things on their fingertips. The students seemed a little overwhelmed with all the programming being sprung on them.  All this instilled nostalgia as to how we attended workshops like these in our first year.

Workshop on Furture Trends and Technology By Bebo White

ACM SEECS chapter has always aimed to get the students familiarize with the present as well as future technological vogues. Keeping that perspective in mind ACM SEECS Chapter invited Mr. Bebo White to SEECS for a workshop on “Future Trends in Technology” on 18-19 March at SEECS NUST H-12 Islamabad.

INTRODUCTION OF BEBO WHITE:
Bebo White is a Departmental Associate (Emeritus) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, operated by Stanford University. Professor White is the author of eight books and over one hundred journal/proceedings articles. His current research interests are Web Science, Social Media in Education, and Cloud Computing.
WORKSHOP-DAY 1:
Mr. White came to SEECS on 18th March 2015 and as he arrived the activities of the event were started. The arrival of the participants took place at 10 am in SEECS seminar Hall and soon after that there was a welcome address by the Principal of SEECS, Dr. Arshad Ali. After Dr. Arshad’s welcome note finally Mr. White took over the stage and began his workshop with the 1st topic i.e. “Cloud and Mobile Computing”. Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the combination of cloud computing, mobile computing and wireless networks to bring rich computational resources to mobile users, network operators, as well as cloud computing providers. The ultimate goal of MCC is to enable execution of rich mobile applications

A short break was there after the 1st session. The workshop resumed at 11:40 am and Mr. White continued with the topic of “Web Science and its impact on the future Web”. He explained the study of web and its impact on future technological vogues in detail. This was followed by the interactive session with the speaker in which the participants cleared their queries.  Soon after that there was lunch break for the guest and the participants and the session resumed at 2:30 pm. Mr. White continued amazing people with his next topic which was “Preparing for the Web of Things”. He explained that what should be our line of action if we want to cope with the changing world in terms of technology and expressed his views about changing of Web and measures needed to cope with it.
This was the last topic of the workshop and after the lecture Mr. White allowed the participants to have a healthy discussion among them related to the topic. Besides this participants got to know each other as well and conversations went on for a while until Mr. White amazed every one with his selfie stick. He requested everyone to join him and the 1st selfie with Mr. Bebo White was taken. Having a selfie stick clearly showed that Mr. Bebo White is such a jolly person full of enthusiasm.

DAY 2 OF WORKSHOP:
Day 2 of the workshop began with the arrival of participants at 10 am. As the participants and the guest arrived the president of ACM SEECS Chapter Mr. Aadil Jalil Chaudhary gave a welcome address. After warm welcome the workshop began in full swing. Mr. White took over the stage and introduced the 1st topic of Day 2 i.e. “Linked Open Data - A Step towards A Semantic Web”. In computing, linked data describes a method of publishing structured data so that it can be interlinked and become more useful through semantic queries. It builds upon standard Web technologies such as HTTP, but rather than using them to serve web pages for human readers, it extends them to share information in a way that can be read automatically by computers. This enables data from different sources to be connected and queried.

After the 1st session a short break was taken and the session resumed at 11:40 am again. Now Mr. White introduced an interesting topic “Cyber-currency/Bitcoin” which attracted the attention of the speakers as this topic was related to the currency and money. Bitcoin is an online payment system invented by Satoshi Nakamoto, who published his invention in 2008, and released it as open-source software in 2009. The system is peer-to-peer; users can transact directly without needing an intermediary. Transactions are verified by network nodes and recorded in a public distributed ledger called the block chain.
This was followed by the interactive session with the speaker and participants cleared the queries. After that on request of under graduate students Mr. White was invited to the SEECS lobby and fun/chit chat session took place and an interesting fact was revealed that Mr. White is a good singer and is a part of Jug Band who play music with a jug. Mr. White sang songs and delighted the audience with his awesome voice. Audience took a lot of pictures with him, asked questions and also sang folk songs depicting Pakistani culture to him (though he needed translation to understand those).

He also told that his favorite Pakistani dish was chopped mutton and peas. After this fun session Bebo White took a lunch break and at 2:30 pm the workshop began again and the last topic of the workshop was “How Online Social Media Can Be Used to Build Rich Learning Environments”.
After this session there were closing remarks by the Pro-Rector. Mr. White distributed certificates among the participants and a shield was presented to Mr. White as a memoir. After that group pictures with Mr. Bebo White were taken and again the selfie stick was an object of focus for everyone. As the selfie stick was famous all over SEECS so at the end of day 2 Mr. White gifted that selfie stick to the ACM SEECS Chapter council as a gratitude for his warm welcome and enthusiasm of the participants.

Be Her Partner

ACM in collaboration with IEEE organized a talk “Be her Partner” by Ms.Tahira Malik, a human rights activist, lawyer, motivational speaker and a visiting faculty member at NUST. She highlighted equal partnership, family support and upbringing of a woman as the key factors for women empowerment. She started by the discussing the importance and credibility of women in the advancing community and highlighted the difficulties a working or studying woman has to face by the biased and prejudiced society.

I carefully paid attention to the talk on ‘how the male dominant society defines self-made barriers in a woman’s life?’ How to make women empowerment possible when there is no equal treatment in areas like career, profession and being self-dependent. While the mentor addressed the audience, there was an aura of agreement and disagreement. A very good point was raised regarding sexism, just how a gender difference disapproves what you can achieve in life or let you feel safe when you go out for a good time.

Mam specifically pointed out to stand up to the wrong assumptions set up by the so called right people. According to Ms.Tahira, it is truly a matter of choice what a person chooses to wear and as educated people we should never raise a question on a person’s character. The question answer series turned out rather surprising. All the male participants were the most energetic to ask questions which gave the hall a good laugh. However, Ms.Tahira managed to strike back with convincing answers.

The much awaited event of ACM-W was finally announced at November 5th 2014. It was a simple logo designing competition for ACM-W. This competition accepted entries of the designers via mail. The event closed on November 14th 2014, 11:55 pm. After the submissions, top three designs were selected by the judges and were put on the facebook page where the winner was selected on the basis of people voting through likes.

After a fabulous response and a lot of brain storming the winner was finally decided. The winner of this logo designing competition was chosen to be Talha Yousaf from BEE – 5 for his awesome design and was awarded a cash prize of pkr 1000.

CSed week

Computer Science Education Week (CSEd Week) is an annual affair dedicated to make computer science education common among the millions of students across the globe. It was initiated, as we all know, by Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906) and is therefore celebrated each year from 8th to 14th December, worldwide.
Following events were organized by ACM SEECS Chapter this year in honor of the CSEd Week:

DAY 1:
HOUR OF CODE:
The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. The motivation being that
Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science”.
Anyone, anywhere can organize or host an Hour of Code but the grassroots campaign goal is for students to try an Hour of Code and what better time than the CSEd Week!
Keeping in view the significance of this event, ACM-SEECS Chapter organized the “Hour of Code”, and in line with our own aims and objectives we invited female students from a charity school and they were taught basics of coding by the President (ACM SEECS) himself. The purpose of the event, that is reaching out to the less privileged children and making modern technology and computer science education common to them, was achieved, and thus the event was successful.
The only problem was the lack of funds. The targeted student body (charity schools etc.) can’t afford to travel all the way to SEECS, NUST time and again, but neither are we in a position to provide them with conveyance. With this barrier removed we could make a significant difference in the schooling of these students.

DAY 2:
QUAD SOURCE SEMINAR:
A Quad Source Seminar was organized on the 2nd day of CSEd Week at IAEC Lecture Hall in NUST. One of the alumni of NUST Nida came up with the introduction of a new technology “Augmented Reality” and its applications in Gaming, Advertising, and Amusements etc. The session was a source of realization for a lot of people who made up their mind to work on this technology in the near future.

Augmented reality is basically a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. It has wide range of application and the session was arranged to get familiarized with these applications. A lot of videos and scopes were shown related to this technology and at the end question answer session was conducted.

Again the drive behind the organization of this seminar was to acquaint the students with the latest technologies and its uses so that they can use it in their research, projects and other fields.

LOGIC BUILDING SEMINAR:
On Tuesday, December 09 2014 The Association for Information Systems (AIS-SEECS Chapter) in collaboration with ACM-SEECS Chapter organized an another event for the CSEd Week at Farabi Lab SEECS; a logic building workshop for the students who are weak in logic building for programming.
The team of AIS under Mr. Abdul Hannan conducted this workshop and introduced techniques of logic building to the students. Their primary motto was that of Einstein’s’:

“Everything should be made as simple as possible.”
So the students were taught to make things simpler. They were introduced to the technique of “Divide and Conquer” so that problems could be broken down into smaller ones and tackled in a more efficient way. This workshop consisted of tutorials, lectures and at the end some activities by the students.
Towards the end some prizes were also given to people who completed the activities in time.

DAY 3:
CODE2SUCCESS:
In continuation of the Logic Building Workshop a coding session was also organized for the students, with small prizes for the best codes. This also aimed at inspiring the students’ interest in the field of computer science and related fields.
The session did not focus on a particular programming language but instead on how proficient a participant is at designing an algorithm for a particular problem and how fast, be it in any language. The designing of the algorithm is the essence of coding. Anyone can find the syntax of any programming language from the internet but until you know how to develop an algorithm you can’t be a successful coder.
Separate tasks picked out for the freshmen and the senior students, the level of difficulty depending on their skills and know-how of “Algorithm Designing”. The level of enthusiasm of the participants was almost tangible; it showed in their number and their efforts to design efficient algorithms.

DAY 4:
ANDROID CODEUP:
Google arranged this competition on December 11th 2014, after a successful Android Development Workshop in November.
The overall objective of the event was to develop an interest of students in Android App Development. The competition was moderated by Rizwan Asif. The participants were given a small task: to develop a Temperature Converter from Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa. The submissions were judged on the basis of aesthetic sense and GUI.
Students responded quite enthusiastically to this competition, as people from not only the Computers Department but also Electrical Engineering took part. More than 30 people registered and some showed up on the spot. Even a few freshmen took part.
The response from the participants was mostly positive. An SE Sophomore, says “This competition was quite helpful for me. I was finally able to test my skills that I developed after attending the Android Workshop.”

The event was planned by Google Student Ambassador Noor Zehra and other members of the NUST Google Community. The Android CodeUp Competition was held on 11th December 2014, 1-2pm, in Farabi Lab, SEECS

LearnObots

ACM in collaboration with LearnObots organized workshops on different fields of applied electronics, robotics etc. The workshop in total consisted of five modules Lego Mindstorm, Snap circuits, Mobile Robots, 3D printing and Solar Power
ACM collaborated in Lego Mindstorm and Snap circuit.
Lego Mindstorm basically is series of kits contain software and hardware to create customizable, programmable robots. They include an intelligent brick computer that controls the system, a set of modular sensors and motors.
Snap Circuits basically is a line of electronic kits manufactured by Elenco Electronics and aimed at children eight years and older. The kits come in a variety of sizes, offering a range of building experience for the user, and may include motors, lamps and speakers
These workshops took place on 5th – 6th Dec and 12th – 13th Dec respectively. The objective of these workshops was to introduce science and engineering at very basic levels to children using toys. The participants were kids from fourth to eight grades. They showed interest and participated enthusiastically.

The workshops went well and they were appreciated

Staff Tales

In the loving memory of Staffas who are no longer with us.

Staffa Formally known as Staff, a member of the EME disciplinary committee with the task of checking students’ uniforms and maintaining discipline over all; Pl, Staffay; staffaic, pertaining to the ways of a Staffa
History The staff were initially clad in pink tracksuits, which resulted in them being popular as Gulabo

Chup kar key chal, Gulabo dekh ley gi teri socks.

For reasons not hard to decipher, their tracksuits were later changed to blue, which changed their nicknames to Staffa.

I.
Staffa Tales

The Couples of Two’s and Three’s and Four’s

Females and males are not allowed to intermingle in EME, as “gender-mixing” is prohibited within the confines of the university. Concentrating on the semantics of the policies should leave the reader impressed, but it is only when the staffaic orations are heard that one begins to fully appreciate the literary side of CEME.
It so happened that once, not very long ago, a young guy accompanied by two female class fellows set himself on the journey towards the bus stand when a Staffa intercepted them. Insisting that the girls leave while he has a word with the guy, the staffa waited patiently while the confused girls exchanged glances with each other and decided to do as told. He then asked the guy to hand over his card and mentioned in clear, blatant terms, “Sahab! Aap coupling kar rahay they. Iss ki ijazat nahin!” Another coupler whom a Staffa sighted with three girls in the library, pretentiously studying but in reality indulged in notorious coupling, was charged with a fine of 5000 Rupees.
Coupling is now a norm in EME, and serves as one of the many reasons why the sadistic author feels the absence of Staffas very strongly.

The Curious Case of Google

The Staffaic objection to Coupling must not limit the reader’s understanding of the their full character. To say that Staffas did not understand the norms of young people and were outdated in their thinking would be an unfounded blasphemy owing to the reader’s lack of sound judgment. They not only understood the modern issues, but were also empathetic towards their effect, the following narration holding testimony to the fact.
Once during Fall In in the Drill Square, a gentleman cadet was missing. Staffa upon counting found one boy short, and inquired about his whereabouts. A guy seemingly morose informed him in a grievous tone that the missing GC had been seriously ill with a condition called “Google,” could not sleep the entire night due to the intensity of the strong “Googling” pains in his abdomen, and was thus rendered unable to move from bed. The other GC’s had similar anguished expressions, and those who had only then discovered the news seemed to be in a state of shock. Empathy had the staffa clutched in its warm grip when he, too, sighed and agreed that the boy was unfortunate to contract the serious ailment that no one could even Google about.

The Bermuda Triangle Pants

The staffaic understanding of Google doesn’t imply an equal acceptance of some other behaviors, such as not wearing pants.
A very remarkable in-living student was not allowed inside the mess because of improper dressing; he was clad in a pair of knee-long Bermudas as opposed to full length pants. This young guy then wore a pair of pants over the Bermudas and entered the mess. Upon seating himself, however, he removed the extra pair of clothing and began dining in his Bermudas. The Chacha at mess objected to this wanton practice, but Mr. Amazing argued that since the Staffa had let him enter, he was in no position to protest. Bewildered, he decided to have a word with the Staffa, when upon their return, both saw a grave looking gentleman in proper dress code eating dinner in a civil, refined manner: the pants were back on.

Cinderella Boy

He went to the Staffa and mentioned his need to return home immediately; there had been a crisis. The Staffa inquired about the details, but he was naturally reluctant to share. Staffa insisted, but the GC was insecure and unsure of the response that would follow the mention of his private details. It was only so long, however, before he began opening up to the staffa about his family struggles and financial troubles, and narrated the many hardships he had faced at the tender age of 19. He told him about his father, the soul bread-earner of their family, and his occupation as a driver, and the meager income not sufficing the needs of the house. The fact that inflation and crumbling national economy did not help the situation, and that life had been a bizarre series of events with nightmares transmuting into realities and integrating themselves into a part of his normal routine which had now left him downtrodden emotionally. It was a long story, but the Staffa was an empathetic  company genuinely interested in his struggles, and the GC mentioned repeatedly how it lightened his burden to be able to share it with someone. The Staffa, concerned with his financial situation, asked him about the vehicle that his father drove.
“Jahaz. Mera abba pilot hain.”
To this, the Staffa left the place angrily saying, “Sahab, yeh aap ney mujhey ullu banaya hai. Yeh sahi baat nahin!”

The Blue-Black Jeans Paradox

Two girls clad in jeans were stopped by a Staffa one morning. ‘Madam, Card!” Since jeans was not allowed to females. Both took out their cards, but the one wearing black jeans was told that her dress was not in violation of the dress code, and that she needed not submit the card. Her friend, however, clothed in blue jeans, had her RFID confiscated. Similar occurrences of card confiscations gave rise to the consciousness of a paradox that is articulately explained by the author as follows.
The discrimination between black and blue jeans is independent of color, and bases solely on the nature or identity of the two pieces of clothing. While blue jeans shows our imitation of a foreign culture, thereby suggesting the existence of a social inferiority complex and a collective lack of values, in addition to signifying a diminishing sense of cultural identity, black jeans is exempted from the category of inappropriate female clothing due to a collective screwing of logic. And, owing to the fact that black and white are deemed equal due to the condemnation of racism by all major religions.
Be ye damned, Racism! Be ye damned, o diabolic discriminator of humanity!
The denouement of the above rational discussion may be summarized in the form of the Staffaic Blue-Black Jeans Paradox: Blue is jeans and black is okay.

II.
The Staffaic Lingo

“Madam! Card! Aap key shoes wraang hain!”
Members of the Pakistan Army, Staffas were no ordinary beings. They had the remarkable skills to scan a student from head to toe in one cursory glance, and possessed the uncanny ability to observe the color of socks even when they were completely hidden under boots.
Rangeen mozey jaa rahay hain!”

Their fine eye for detail and the perfectionist demeanor is hard to keep itself hidden and manifests itself in their speech.
“Sahib, jootey polish nahi hain aap key.”
“Staff, subah kiey they!”
“Yeh dekhain sahib merey shoes, main roz in main chehra dekh kar ata houn! ”

Conventional humans who have always kept themselves confined to customary methods of self-identification and personal analysis, and those who have wasted money on the purchase mirrors owing to their inability to fully fathom and appreciate the r
eflective laws of light are advised not to feel very discouraged.

Their deep religious knowledge and assessment of human psychology is not be ignored, either.
“Madam, Shaal sahi tarah sar par lain.”
Hence, a “shaal” taken with the intention of letting the slightest breeze enable it to slip off the hair shall need to be readjusted; the staffa sees right through such girlish antics. This may also be followed by a quick religious sermon in case the shaal is too transparent to serve the purpose.
“Madam, Shaal wraang hai, Shaal pehchan hoti hai!”Therefore, a “shaal” too thin to qualify as the identification of a Muslim EMEnent girl shall be a violation of the dress code, irrespective of the required navy blue color.

III.
Safety Measures

Staffas were strategically deployed on all the crucial points: near the buses to greet descending students, next to the card swiping area for welcoming indolent creatures who didn’t like to swipe, on the bridge, and in front of the departments. However, like all other plans, this too, did not prove to be foolproof.  Should the Staffas ever come back, the students must continue the legacy of the seniors.
Things that save EMEnents when encountering a Staffa:
  • 1.       The adamant insistence that you are Ruqayya Bano or Hamida Begum if a staffa asks your name. The author often went by the name of Pari Bibi.
  • 2.       Card ghar reh gya hai!” to the first staffa who objects to your wraang uniform.
  • 3.       Card pichley staff ney ley lia tha!”  in case of being asked for it by a staffa deployed at a later location

Laws of Escape

Survival instincts in case of predatory staffaic encounters can be mainly categorized into two types. It is to be considered that these only work in case of female students.

The Fright or Flight Response
A female student, in case of an encounter with a Staffa, should run. She will most definitely not be pursued owing to an utter lack of appropriateness of the act. The only course of her pursuit will be acoustic, with sound waves reverberating a loud, bewildered “Madam! Madam! Aap ruk jayein. Aap key shoes wraang hain!” To her convenience, the intensity of the sound waves should be inversely proportional to the distance she covers by running, and hence the noise should not be audible for very long.
In case of the unlikely event of her being followed by a Staffa, she should not concern herself with outrunning him, as slow, joyful sauntering also serves the purpose. This, due to the simple fact that the Staffa by no means has the liberty to catch her. However, If the impossible happens and the staffa, most likely high on a heavy dose of cocaine, or a victim of Samad Bond solvent-abuse (most likely the latter), decides to grab her, she has the option of making a strong case against the homicidal assault. The Cadet Battalion will in 10 cases out of 5, vote in her favor. Hence, the odds of success are 200%, and the RFID is in her pocket.
If a sociopathic skeptic inquires the cause of her running, any reason such as “I wanted to exercise,” “It was Tuesday,” “I had promised myself to be the first one to enter the class,” or “My limbs are infidels to my mind” should serve the purpose.
This, in the memory of a great, hilarious senior who actually did
run away on being called by a Staffa.

The Appeal to Empathy by a Display of Female Vulnerability

Female students who prefer drama over exercise, upon a Staffaic encounter, should make a convincing show of pretentious vulnerability and give an immaculate performance of innocence. It has been shown to work effectively well if the pitch of sound is kept medium and the volume intensity low. Choking back soft sobs while giving a long, grievous narration of personal struggles has guaranteed a hundred percent success with all Staffa’s.
“Madam! Card! Aap key shoes wraang hain.”
“Merey shoes phat gaye they kal. Mein roz black shoes hi pehan kar hi jaya karti thi, per phatney ki wajah sey unhain pehan kar paoun main zakham hou gaye hain. Ab mouchi ko diey huey hain, iss liye aaj na chahney key bawajood, majbooran yeh heels pehan’ni pareen. Aap please mujhey aaj ka din dey dain! Mouchi ka udhaar wapis kar key kal tak mein jootey ley aoun gi.”
“Jayein madam. Apna khayal rakhain.”

A special thanks to everyone who narrated the stories of Staffas to me, especially Aleena and Faisal. And to Sobia Kanwal, my techie friend whose love for the Staffas transformed itself into PhotoShop drawings.
